Ray Trinder (Deceased)
Broken Wands

The following few words were sent to The Magic Circular and The Budget after Ray's death. For some reason I didn't think about putting them on our Society Site. This has now been rectified.
I have many happy memories of Ray and he could always be relied on at our Auctions to set the bids rolling with his regular opening bid of "One Shilling".

It was with considerable sadness that I heard of Ray's passing, having had the pleasure of knowing him since we moved to Reading over forty years ago. Ray was one who I would describe as a true gentleman who went about his work with British Rail and for the Home Counties Magical Society here in Reading in a quiet, yet very efficient manner.

Ray was one of the early members of the HCMS, joining in 1950 shortly after the formation; he served as a Council Member for many years, was President in 1966 and held the position of Treasurer for many years. He was made a Life Member of the Society for his services and work which dated back to the days of him joining.

He was for a period the local Interrogation Officer for The British Ring and until his health deteriorated, a regular Convention attendee with his wife Rosalind. Ray was a competent and popular performer with his own very special way of presenting Punch and Judy.

Due to his declining health he was not seen very much over recent years at meetings although it was not unusual to "bump into him" whilst shopping locally.

Our deepest condolences go to his widow Ros, not herself in the best of health, and to all the family and grandchildren. Rest in peace Ray.

David Nixon - Entertainer with the Magic Touch (Edwin A. Dawes, Stephen Short)

Hardback, 276 x 210mm, 288 pages, price £35.00  www.jeremymillspublishing.co.uk.

David Nixon: Entertainer with the Magic TouchMention to anyone ‘Magic and TV’ and you will normally get one of a number of answers depending on the age range, but you can almost guarantee that one of those names will be David Nixon. Dubbed ‘The Father of Magic on TV’, David is fondly remembered by many for this relaxed and friendly style of magic, and his long career on TV in the 1950’s through to the 1970’s. Yet strangely, there has never been any major book on David’s life and career. Thankfully Edwin A Dawes and Stephen Short have collated photos, memories and first hand experiences from many of David’s family, friends and colleagues in show business into a wonderful, enlightening, humorous and factual trip through the life, times and experience that was ‘David Nixon - Entertainer with the Magic Touch’

Delving into this gorgeous and lavish book there is an abundance of photos, magazine clippings, show bills, and television stills, many of which have been collected from the Nixon family, friends and associates, these create a wonderful base around which David’s life story can be told, over 200 photos and illustrations covering all the aspects of David’s on stage, screen and personal life bring the book and David’s story to life. The book was written with help and assistance from the Nixon family, a number of close friends and colleagues of David including the late Ali Bongo. Their memories of David also helps capture and convey David’s delightful charm not only of his magic, but of his personality as well.

We've added two great lectures to this years line up, Magician, Writer, Comedian and all round nice guy Mark James will join us in July, and Thom Peterson will be back with us again in August.

Mark James will be with us on July 15th, Marks lecture will be in two parts, the first half mainly close-up magic, and the second half stand-up and comedy magic.

Thom Peterson joined us last year, and his lecture was met with such positive comments that we're bringing him back for a brand new lecture on August 19th. This lecture will be completely different to last years and Thom will only be doing 2 card effects, the reminder of the lecture will be non-card effects,  covering close-up and stand-up magic.
