1. The Paul Pearman Cup may, at the Council's discretion, be competed for annually (or as decided by the Council) in a contest for the most ENTERTAINING MAGICAL ACT, by Members of the HCMS.
2. The winner shall hold the Cup for the period of ONE year or until the next competition. In the event of two Members tying for the first place, each shall hold the Cup for SIX months. The winner(s) will not be eligible to enter subsequent competitions.
3. The Society shall provide a non-monetary award for the winner(s), or as the Council shall decide.
4 The competition shall be open to fully paid up Members of the HCMS of at least six months standing, approved by the Council.
5. The competition shall take place at a special meeting, open to visitors and at a venue decided by the Council.
6. Officials for the competition shall be appointed by the Council as deemed necessary.
7. One of the officials appointed shall be a Time-Keeper who shall be at the disposal of the competitors to give them warning.
8. A second official shall act as Advisory Official; duties to ensure that the correct voting procedure is carried out and confidentiality maintained.
9. Each competitor shall be required to limit the duration of the act to a period not exceeding TWELVE minutes, or to such period of time as the Council shall determine after consideration of the number of competitors taking part. If a competitor exceeds the time limit, there will be a maximum period of SIXTY SECONDS to conclude the act. Disqualification will be automatic if this further period is exceeded.
10. Warning lights will be shown at TEN minutes and again at TWELVE minutes. Competitors will be advised of the timing of the warning lights and colours to be used.
11. The position of each competitor in the competition shall be decided by ballot and may be altered ONLY at the discretion of the Competition Organiser.
12. Members wishing to take part in the competition shall notify the Competition Organiser at least SIX weeks in advance of the date of the competition.
13. Competitors may use an assistant or assistant(s). If an assistant is required from the audience competitors may arrange this in advance to avoid any delay in obtaining the required help and to keep withing the time period.
14. Competitors may use live or recorded music.
15. Visitors may be invited to the competition, but if the judging is by the audience and non-competing Members, competitors should limit their invitations to avoid any obvious bias in the invited audience.
16. Judging shall be by the non-competing Members and visitors or by a Council appointed Member as Judge (who will arrange for a further magical judge and a lay person to complete the panel).
17. In the event of any dispute (staging, timing, lighting etc) the Competition Organiser shall make the final decision (with reference to any Council Member if thought necessary) and his/her decision shall be final and absolute.
18. Members or Competitors may suggest alteration(s) or addition(s) to these Rules and the Council will consider the alteration(s) or addition(s) at their next meeting.
19. All competitors will be expected to perform in a fitting and seemly manner with nothing in the manner of presentation or content which could reflect against or harm the established Performance Reputation of the Society.
The Society Shield Competition
The Rules of the Paul Pearman Cup Competition shall apply to the Shield Competition which is open to previous winners of the Paul Pearman Cup Competition.
