Yesterdays Mail Online ran an article on how the interest in the history of illusion and magic has sent values soaring, and props once seen as rubbish can fetch thousands of pounds. Ali Bongo MIMC, is president of The Magic Circle, the international club for professional magicians founded in 1905 and based in a magnificent HQ in London's Euston.
Ali, who is also a consultant for the UK TV series Jonathan Creek, said: 'Modern props are usually trashed after use, but early ones were more substantial and were regularly repaired and used again. Magicians do not want their secrets exposed, so the most expensive part of the investment might be buying how the illusion works.' A whole host of collectible and rare items are housed in The Magic Circle Headquarters in London, including an item by British magician Robert Harbin, the 'Zig Zag Lady' and is worth at least £10,000. Jack Delvin, of The Inner Magic Circle, said that some of the most collectible posters where those by Chung Ling Soo: 'They were used as wrapping paper for magic tricks in the Second World War during a paper shortage. Now they fetch £12,000 to £20,000.' The majority of vintage magic tricks change hands among magicians through private trading and specialist shops. Internet trading sites such as eBay may offer bargains but beware of fakes, Delvin warns. 'Do not invest in magic unless you love it,' he says |
