Hi Keith, thanks for your email.
Here are Rachel's words.....
I just wanted to give everyone an update on how things are going. I finally had the direct line to my heart (which delivered infusions daily) removed yesterday. This has a good side to it and a bad side, on the good side it is great to get it out and a lot more comfortable but now I do not have the protection of the antibiotics and so I am a a great risk for further infections.
They will be drawing blood cultures for the next 3 weeks to ensure that my system is remaining clear and also they are trying to address the anemia that the infections have left me with. I will be going for testing this week for penicillin resistance as this is one of the only drugs the infections are resistant to and I am allergic to it!!!!.Once we have got through this I will be headed back to the cardiologists for examination by ultrasound and a camera into the back of the heart to assess the damage that this last bout of infection has caused. As the doc said yesterday, "It was like an earthquake took place inside your body and now we have to look at the aftermath." Great way of looking at it!!!
We will then start to discuss the different surgical possibilities for the replacement of the valve. Anyhow I don't want to bore you all to death, I know that so many people have their own medical issues to deal with too. Aldo is taking great care of me, Molly is being a little angel and I have even been able to do a few effects at a couple of lectures Aldo has had, although I tend to run out of steam towards the end.
