I am very pleased to see that member Andy Stone is standing for election to the Committee of The British Ring. Longstanding members will know Andy from past years but for the benefit of those who know him only by name, a few brief words.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Andy since he was a young teenager and once he became a full member of the HCMS he was a regular member of the Junior Day team where his expertise and knowledge was of great value. He was an active Council Member and Programme Secretary for some time. Due to the nature of his work with the BBC and having moved away from Reading we see too little of him, but despite the journey from Chandlers Ford, he manages to attend more frequently than some who live locally!

I know from his "input" to the HCMS that he will be a valuable member of the British Ring Committee and he certainly has my vote as recorded on my ballot paper which was posted today.

Todays Reading Chronicle features a article on one of our members, Robert Bone. The article talks about Roberts recent membership of The Magic Circle:

Robert Bone, was accepted into the prestigious Magic Circle after a gruelling interview and audition process. He said: “I’m really pleased to be accepted into the world famous Magic Circle. I chose a variety of effects to perform to demonstrate a wide range of skills and also ensured that there was a good amount of fun involved too. The Circle, based in a prestigious headquarters in central London complete with its own theatre, library and museum, was formed in 1905 and now has around 1,500 members.

The Article also mentioned The Home Counties Magical Society, and if you have the actual paper, you'll see a picture of Robert on the front cover!!

When it comes to job satisfaction, Richard Young is delighted with his chosen career path. In fact, he is a good example of someone that great philosopher Confucius was thinking of when he apparently said: "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life."

As a close-up magician, Mr Young, 23, is used to making people happy. He discovered magic at the age of eight and performed his first paying gig three years later.

"It was only £5, for entertaining at a local child's birthday party," he said.

He went on to win a national close-up magic competition at 14, and then met Wantage's Bob Swadling, who offered to become his mentor. He helps his protege with his magic and also with the entertainment and performance skills that make a good magician great.
