Well over one hundred people attended New Greenham Arts, Newbury, on Thursday 7th September to see Robert Bone’s full evening one man show of mental magic which he entitled A Demonstration of Extra-Sensory Curiosities.
The audience sat mostly at tables, cabaret style, while Rob performed on stage. Drinking was encouraged and the lay-out led to a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere that facilitated audience participation which was a feature of the show.
For someone of my generation Rob’s appearance and personality reminded me of David Nixon. Very tall, gentle, and likeable who treated his audience volunteers with kindness and respect. Not that many in the audience would remember David Nixon as most were of the younger adult generation which augers well for magic , although I suspect that if the show had been billed as An Evening of Magic fewer would have turned up!
The magic, or demonstration of extra-sensory curiosities as Rob would have it, consisted of a range of mentalist effects, mostly well known to today’s magicians but very well presented with sustained light-hearted patter which made for great entertainment without being overly serious which can occur in mentalist performances. Cards selected at random were correctly predicted and revealed in numerous ways. Drawings prepared by audience members on pieces of card and concealed in envelopes were predicted a’la Pseudo Psychometry. An excellent four book test had the audience amazed.
During the interval the audience were invited to write questions on pieces of card, conceal them in envelopes and post them into a box on the stage. This was in preparation for the opening of the second half in which Rob predicted the questions, provided the answers and generally demonstrated his psychic knowledge of quite a few audience members much to their amazement. Another highlight was a blindfold effect using coins on the eyes secured with gaffer tape.

Two of our members Richard Young and Sam Strange, who performed at our annual dinner a few weeks ago have just received the news that they will be appearing in the second episode of the upcoming ITV1 prime time TV series Penn & Teller; Fool Us.
The series is hosted by Jonathan Ross and starts on Saturday 18th June at 8pm on ITV1. Sam and Richard's episode goes out on the 25th June also on ITV1 at 8pm.
Rich and Sam who go under their double act name 'Young & Strange' (www.youngandstrange.co.uk) will perform their best trick for Penn & Teller, if they manage to fool the famous magicians will win an all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas to open Penn & Teller's show at The Rio Hotel & Casino.
Penn & Teller; Fool Us, will run for 7 episodes over the summer and if the pilot episode in January was anything to go by, will hopefully bring magic right back in to the publics interest. |

Once again our Membership Secretary had cajoled six of the "New or Newish Group" to provide the entertainment following the AGM. There was a good variety of effects with both mysification and humour.
Rob Beadle started the ball rolling and after talking about Internet Communication groups proceeded to reveal his correct prediction of a mystery card previously put into his card case. Mike Green appeared delightfully confused but in full control as he beat his way through his presentation to finish with his personalised version of the Linking Rings. Danny Jurman had a wicked looking dagger, but we were, thankfully, safe from this as he proceeded through rope and silk, T & R card and used the weapon to cut his rope for his Unequal Ropes finale.
Rod Type, fresh from his Raffle Ticket selling had three tables, three meals, three different currencies and three predictions. Three willing helpers made their choices ... and Rod was successful in his three predictions. Steve Graham started with his prediction envelope in full view for the duration of his spot and with two helpers having chosen Destiny or Free Will he finally proved that he had been right from the outset. Mike Stoner closed with an intriguing box containing a cube with six choices - pet, family, work friends etc. Three members each placed the cube in the box showing their particular choice , lid on ... all with Mike turned away to make it impossible to see the choice. Three successes merely by questions and asking for a name.
All in all a good end to a successful AGM .. thanks to "The Mystical Six" and Brian for arranging this once again. |

Five members descended on the Concert Hall at Reading Town Hall to provide the magical table entertainment for the "Visits Thank You Tea Party" on Tuesday 15th March 2011
Helping to boost the Society Funds were; Robin Maddy, Rodney Type, Len Crouch, Clive Winterton and Keith Churcher. For almost two hours the performers moved amongst the tables and applause and laughter was very much the order of the day. In addition to the magical talents on show we were all delighted to see the "Scissor Skill" of Silhouette Cutter, Sarah Goddard who joined us at the conclusion when we took a welcome and well earned tea break. Sarah was invited to come along to the Competition on the following Thursday and it was a pleasure to welcome her last Thursday when she and her parents joined us for the evening and other members and friends were able to admire her very rare skill. (Further information can be found at www.visagesilhouettes.co.uk )
Originally the numbers expected at the Tea Party were 80 to 100, but a phone call from the Organiser just before the event said that the response had been doubled; she was assured by me that this would be no problem and I would endeavour to add one or two more performers. "With the increased numbers I will have to increase your Society fee". I assured her that the fee agreed was quite acceptable. Her last words were "Just leave it to me!".
The cheque handed to me during the afternoon by the Group's Treasurer had been folded and put into my shirt pocket ... whilst having our break, I opened the cheque, managed not to fall off the chair and showed the other four ... WOW! To see what the amount was you'll have to go to the Member's Section, and needless to say I have responded and expressed our thanks.
Feed-back from those present has, I was told when talking later in the week with the Organiser been good and on the same Tuesday evening I received three calls from a former business colleague, a fellow bowler and a party Mum, expressing their enjoyment at the magical entertainment provided.
Thanks to the "Fabulous Four" for their part in boosting the Society Funds.
